Suranjit's wife Joya wins Sunamganj by-election with AL ticket

Joya Sengupta will represent the Sunamganj-2 constituency in parliament, from where her late husband Suranjit Sengupta was elected MP seven times.

The ruling Awami League candidate has won the by-election to the Dirai-Shalla seat in Sunamganj, bagging 95,995 votes.

Assistant Returning Officer Hafizur Rahman announced the results on Thursday night after daylong voting.

Joya's only rival independent candidate Sayed Ali Mahbub Hossain got 40,929 votes.

The Election Commission announced the schedule for the by-polls after Awami League Advisory Council member Suranjit died on Feb 5.
