Dhaka, Aug 26 (bdnews24.com)—Opposition leader Khaleda Zia's nephew Saiful Alam Duke has been arrested in relation to the Aug 21 grenade attack case.
Duke was detained early on Wednesday night after the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police interrogated him in the case, for the second time, at its headquarters.
On Aug 24, Duke, who was the second personal secretary of the BNP chairperson during the BNP-led coalition government, was freed after the first interrogation.
Abdul Kahhar Akhand, CID's special superintendent involved in the investigation of the Aug 21 grenade attack, told bdnews24.com on Thursday that "Duke has been shown arrested in the grenade attack case."
He said Duke was being interrogated on the basis of some information that the police had got from the other arrestees in the case. The police also got some important information from him, Akhand added.
The police will request that he be remanded in police custody on Thursday, after producing him at the court, the CID official said.
A source in the CID said that Duke had been interrogated to find the whereabouts of his brother-in-law Saiful Islam Joarder, who is currently abroad.
Joarder headed an intelligence department during the past BNP regime. He is suspected to be responsible for the escape of Maulana Tajuddin Ahmed, a prime suspect in the case, from the country.
BNP activist Tajuddin is the brother of former BNP deputy minister Abdus Salam Pintu, who has already been arrested in connection with this case.
