Fakhrul was due to meet Khaleda at 3pm Thursday, said BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi.
He started from the party headquarters but the meeting was cancelled as Khaleda suddenly fell ill, Rizvi told bdnews24.com.
“We heard that a team of physicians will go to the jailhouse to see Khaleda.”
Khaleda, a three-time prime minister, is serving a five-year jail term at the old jailhouse on Nazimuddin Road after being convicted in the Zia Orphanage Trust graft case on Feb 8.
The jailor phoned Khaleda’s private secretary and informed him about Khaleda’s illness, the BNP leaders said.
The jail authorities refused to talk on the matter.
Reporters, who gathered outside the jail building on Thursday afternoon, could not cite any formal announcement by the jail authorities.
On Mar 7, seven members of the BNP Standing Committee paid a visit to Khaleda.
Khaleda’s sister Selina Islam, brother Shamim Eskander, and his wife Kaniz Fatima have visited her several times since she was put behind bars.
Her attorneys, Barrister Moudud Ahmed, Jamir Uddin Sircar, Khandaker Mahbub Hossain, Abdur Rezak Khan and AJ Mohammad Ali have visited her.
No-one has visited Khaleda since Mar 27 when Advocate Zainul Abedin, president of Supreme Court Bar Association, and five of her other counsels dropped by the prison.
