The Jatiya Party (JP) is currently the main opposition in Parliament and also part of the government, a dual role some party supporters find intriguing.
Speaking at a function on Tuesday organised by a party wing, Quader said people find the JP’s position confusing.
This was Quader’s first-ever public remark on the party, currently witnessing a power struggle after Chairman HM Ershad designated his brother, Quader, as his successor.
“We do not have control over the administration, cash, or muscle power...our only strength is people’s support, but that has now dropped drastically,” said Quader, who had been a minister in Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s previous government.
His pointer was to the party’s poor showing in the last municipal elections.
“We don’t have any grievance against anyone. But we don’t want to remain a coalition partner and an opposition party at the same time. We want to speak for the people and gain their confidence,” he said.
He added that the people wanted the Jatiya Party to forge ahead. “It’s the expectation of the leaders and activists at the grass-roots.”
