Dhaka, Jan 3 (bdnews24.com)— The High Court has granted two months' anticipatory bail to BNP organising secretary M Ilias Ali and 65 others on charges of violence and arson attack in Sylhet and Sirajganj last month.
The joint bench of justices Salma Masud Chowdhury and Shahidul Karim granted them bail on Monday after the defendants appeared before the court for bail.
On Dec 18, police dispersed a BNP supporters' gathering at the city's Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh to honour freedom fighters. Explosion of homemade bombs and acts of arson spread across the capital, leaving one person dead. Another person was killed in Sylhet in an arson attack on a bus.
The following day, six cases were filed against BNP leaders and supporters with Shahporan, Kotwali Model, Jalalabad, South Surma police stations in Sylhet and Bangabandhu Bridge West Police Station in Sirajganj.
Among the accused, 19 appeared in court in five cases filed in Sylhet and the rest in the Sirajganj case.
Barristers Mahbubuddin Khokhon and Ragib Rouf Chowdhury represented the defendants and deputy attorney general advocate Khandakar Diliruzzaman represented the state.
