Greeting the new coalition member on Saturday night, the BNP Chairperson said, "From today 18-Party has become 19-Party. Everyone knows that 19 is a lucky number."

"I think 19-Party will bring good news in 2014 for the movement for reinstating democracy and welfare of the people.

“We will be victorious," she said.

Kazi Zafar along with his party presidium members and a horde of supporters came to Khaleda’s Gulshan office around 7.30 pm.

At a view-exchange meeting organised on the occasion of Kazi Zafar’s forging alliance with the BNP, Khaleda said “This government was not formed by the people’s vote. It is an illegal government.

“They are in power by force, by intimidating and torturing the public.”

She further claimed that opposition activists were killed and abducted during the joint force’s raids.

The BNP chief observed that they emerged winners on the Jan 5 polls though the alliance had boycotted it.

“We did not lose in the farcical election. The Awami League lost. That’s why they are shouting loud now. They have attacked Hindu community to distract the people’s attention.”

Terming the BNP the party of freedom fighters, Khaleda said, “We have freedom fighters in our party. Those who are present here including Oli Ahmed, Kazi Zafar, are all freedom fighters.

“The BNP is the party which supported the Liberation War, while the Awami League is the party those who crossed the border (into India).”

Jamaat-e-Islami’s executive council member Redwan Ullah Shahedi was also at the stage with Khaleda then. The party had opposed Bangladesh’s independence from Pakistan.

“The Awami League held the election by force. No political parties were with them, except those who existed in names only.

“They become MPs by boarding the boat. And there’s the one who is an opportunist. He keeps on changing his stand,” BNP chief said, clearly indicating Jatiya Party chief HM Ershad.

Speaking at the meeting, Kazi Zafar said that democracy was finished and it needed to be restored.

“As a seasoned politician, I want to say we have succeeded in the movement of boycotting the Jan 5 polls. We have no reasons to be disappointed.”

BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, Standing Committee member Khandakar Mosharraf Hossain and LDP President Oli Ahmed also spoke in the meeting.
