Leaders and activists of the banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and Jubo League have reportedly organised a cake-cutting event in Shariatpur to mark ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s birthday.
The incident took place near Jora Bridge in the Gorom Bazar area of Zajira Upazila on Saturday night, Shariatpur Additional Superintendent of Police (Naria Circle) Md Mohiuddin Miraj said.
Police rushed to the scene after receiving information about the gathering for Hasina, who faces the death penalty after being convicted of crimes against humanity, prompting those present to flee.
Locals said several young men had assembled in the area to celebrate Hasina’s birthday and had arranged to cut a cake.
Police later recovered an intact cake and five motorcycles from the scene.
Miraj said police could not immediately identify the owners or users of the motorcycles, adding that legal action over the incident was under way.
The incident came days after allegations that banned Chhatra League activists had held a procession on the Dhaka-Shariatpur Highway at Char Khagutia in Zajira’s Borkandi Union on Sept 23.
A video circulated on social media showed several people taking part in the procession.
District police said they would analyse the footage, identify those involved and take legal action.
