A clash between activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and the Gono Odhikar Parishad has broken out in Kushtia, during which the car of Amir Hamza was vandalised.
The Kushtia-3 MP suffered a head injury when the vehicle's windscreen shattered in the attack, police said.
At least 10 people from both sides were injured in the clash.
The incident occurred around 6pm on Saturday near Hamza's residence at Chhoyrasta intersection in the city, said Faisal Mahmud, additional police superintendent in Kushtia.
The injured are being treated at Kushtia 250 Bed General Hospital. Their names and identities were not immediately available.
Police and witnesses said Gono Odhikar activists had organised a protest rally at the intersection in the afternoon after accusing Hamza of making derogatory remarks about the party’s president and secretary general.
Hamza’s residence is near the rally venue. Towards the end of the event, his supporters began shouting slogans from his car as he returned home under police escort, triggering tension between the two sides.
The two groups first exchanged blows before the confrontation turned into a clash.
Gono Odhikar activists later left the area.
During Maghrib prayers, Jamaat activists allegedly attacked the party’s district office at High School Market with sticks.
They then marched to an area near Haripur Bridge at Chhoyrasta intersection, where they attacked and vandalised the office of Abdul Khalek, president of the Gono Odhikar’s district unit.
Tensions remained high in the city.
Gono Odhikar Organising Secretary Toukir Ahmed accused Hamza and Jamaat activists of attacking their peaceful programme and later vandalising the party office.
He said three of their activists, including himself, were injured.
Hamza said he had been attending an event near Islamic University when he learnt that “abusive remarks” were being made about his parents.
"As I was driving behind the Sadar Police Station chief’s vehicle, a group led by Gono Odhikar Parishad Kushtia district unit's general secretary and organising secretary, suddenly attacked my car with sticks and stones," he said,
He claimed seven other Jamaat activists were injured in the attack.
Addl SP Faisal said the situation was currently normal, with police deployed around the MP's residence and surrounding areas.
