Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay Prof Suryanarayana Doolla has been asked to go on leave amid a probe into the death of second-year BTech student Sahil Wakode.
The institute has formed a 10-member committee to examine the circumstances surrounding Wakode’s death and given the panel one week to submit its findings, WION News reports.
The Mumbai Crime Branch is conducting a separate investigation and reviewing CCTV footage from the examination hall, including footage of an interaction between Wakode and Doolla shortly before the student left the exam, the Indian news channel said.
Doolla had earlier been removed from his administrative role as dean of administrative affairs but continued as a faculty member.
Wakode’s family has alleged that institute officials, including Doolla, subjected him to harassment and caste-based discrimination.
The allegations are under investigation and have not been established.
The latest action comes amid student protests on the IIT Bombay campus demanding accountability and a detailed inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Wakode’s death.
