Seven countries, including India, Germany and Qatar, are in the running to host the 2036 Summer Olympics, the International Olympic Committee said on Tuesday.

Hungary, Turkey, South Africa and South Korea are also in preliminary talks with the IOC. Some candidates are expected to progress to a strategic dialogue phase before a shortlist is drawn up in March next year.

The preferred hosts will be named in 2028, with the final decision expected in mid-2029, the IOC said.

Other interested countries have until Oct 31 to enter the process, although the IOC said new candidates appear unlikely with less than four weeks remaining before the deadline.

Los Angeles will host the 2028 Olympics, followed by Brisbane in 2032.
