Former deputy prime minister LK Advani, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, former vice-president Jagdeep Dhankhar and Election Commissioner SS Sandhu are among several prominent voters issued notices over "discrepancies" in details submitted during New Delhi's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, according to the Indian Express.
Rajya Sabha MP Kapil Sibal, who received a notice along with his wife under the "unmapped with last SIR" category, criticised the Election Commission, describing the exercise as "special intensive deletion" of votes.
The notices followed the publication of draft electoral rolls covering more than 9.7 million voters, with 3.3 million notices sent over discrepancies in enumeration forms, mostly not matching records from the 2002 SIR.
Delhi's Chief Electoral Officer's office said the notices were system-generated to help voters correct discrepancies, adding there was "no existential crisis as is being brought out in social and print" media.
Others who have received or are likely to receive notices include Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, former Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia, ex-JNU vice-chancellor M Jagadesh Kumar, former lieutenant governor Najeeb Jung, former NITI Aayog vice-chairman Arvind Panagariya, SEBI chief Tuhin Kanta Pandey, former army chief Upendra Dwevedi and CBI Director Praveen Sood.
Advani, 98, along with his daughter Pratibha and daughter-in-law Geetika, were served notices after their names could not be mapped to the 2002 roll, though his son Jayant cleared the process. They all are voters in the New Delhi constituency.
Jaishankar and his wife Kyoko, and former vice-president Dhankhar and his wife Sudesh, received notices under the same category.
Sandhu received a notice over a name mismatch, while his son Damanbir's notice cited a mismatch in his parent's name. Both are registered in Delhi Cantonment constituency.
Sisodia, his wife Seema and son Meer were also issued notices, though officials said no reason was specified for Sisodia's.
Poll officials said a voter cannot be removed without an opportunity to respond and a proper appealable order.
The name of late economist Bibek Debroy also appeared on the list, marked "unmapped with last SIR". Debroy, who died in November 2024, will have his name excluded from the final list, an official said.
A senior poll officer confirmed prominent voters, including Advani, Jaishankar, Dhankhar and Sisodia, would have their names retained after document verification, currently under way.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Sibal were also among those issued notices. Gupta's entry has since been validated for inclusion in the final roll for Shalimar Bagh constituency, due Nov 4.
The notices form part of the SIR's claims and objections stage, ending Sept 30, with voters asked to submit responses by Oct 29.
