Sundarbans’ wild fruit finds a market in Dhaka

A familiar sight in the Sundarbans, the golpata is a palm-like plant whose leaves thatch roofs and whose fruit is a coastal delicacy. Now, the distinctive palmyra-like fruit has travelled from the mangrove forest to Dhaka’s streets.

Golpata trees flower and bear fruit throughout the year in the Sundarbans, though larger bunches are more common in Ashar, the third month of the Bengali calendar.
