Rajshahi mangoes harvested on first day of Jaistho

The harvesting and preparation of mangoes for market began in Rajshahi on Thursday, the first day of the Bengali month of Jaistho. According to the “Mango Calendar” set by the government, Rajshahi’s farmers and traders can start selling the Guti variety of mangoes.

Guti mangoes are harvested in Rajshahi at the start of the picking season. The mangoes are sold for Tk 1,300-1,500 per 40kg.

Mangoes are picked and sorted at an orchard in Rajshahi. Guti mangoes are the first variety to set off for market.

Farmers are hopeful of getting a good price at market for their mangoes this year as mango harvesting and preparation for market have been completed by the time set by the government.

This year, mangoes have been cultivated on 19,603 hectares of land in Rajshahi this year, according to Salma Akter, deputy director of the Department of Agricultural Extension. The production target has been set at 260,006 metric tonnes.
