Former health minister AFM Ruhal Haque, inaugurating the summit, said such care could help patients regain their functions.

Doctors and medical students converged at the summit and discussed the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation aspects of stroke, a leading cause of death.

Uncontrolled blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking are known as ‘risk factors’ for stroke.

The British charity, Sir William Beveridge Foundation, organised the summit with the aim of raising awareness about the disease, which often incapacitates a person even after treatment.

The Foundation offers home-based post-treatment rehabilitation services.

Haque who was health minister from 2OO9 to 2O13, extolled the services and said, “We can train more people in providing this care.”

“There are job opportunities abroad for them,” he said.

Prof ASM Kamrul Hassan, Head of the neurosurgery department of Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College and Hospital, presented the keynote paper at the inaugural session, which was moderated by Secretary of the Summit Dr Subrato Ghosh.

The former president of India’s Neurological Society, Prof RN Bhattacharya, and the president of the summit, Major General (retd) Jiban Kanai Das, also spoke at the summit.
