Bangladesh records another dengue death as toll reaches 44 this year

Hospitals across the country admitted 546 new patients as infections continued to spread

Bangladesh has reported one more dengue death and 546 new hospital admissions over the past 24 hours.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Monday said the latest fatality brings this year's dengue death toll to 44, including 26 recorded in July.

Among the new admissions, 58 patients were hospitalised in Dhaka North City Corporation, 56 in Dhaka South, and 109 elsewhere in the capital.

Outside Dhaka, Barishal Division recorded 96 admissions, Chattogram 97, Khulna 65, Rajshahi 32, Mymensingh 24 and Rangpur nine.

Hospitals discharged another 540 patients who had recovered from the mosquito-borne disease.

Since Jan 1, Bangladesh has recorded 13,644 dengue-related hospital admissions, with 12,477 patients discharged.

The health directorate has tracked dengue hospitalisations and deaths since 2000.

The country's worst outbreak came in 2023, when 321,179 people were hospitalised and 1,705 died.

More than 400 people died and around 102,000 infections were recorded last year.
