Amjad suffered a stroke in November and was put on life support in a Dhaka hospital.

When his condition improved slightly, the filmmaker was flown to Thailand for better treatment.

Amjad breathed his last on Friday afternoon at Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand, said SA Haque Alik, a filmmaker from Bangladesh.

Amjad, who was also popular scriptwriter, lyricist and actor, was born in Jamalpur in 1942.

He entered Dhallywood in 1961 as an actor starring in a film, ‘Harano Din’. Later, he started writing scripts and directing films.

His first movie ‘Khela’ was released in 1967. He worked as an assistant director with veteran filmmaker Zahir Raihan in his most popular feature film, ‘Jibon Theke Neya’.

He came into the limelight with his films named ‘Nayanmoni’, ‘Golapi Ekhon Traine’, ‘Sundori’, `Janmo Theke Jolchhi’, `Dui Poyshar Alta’, ‘Bhat De’, ‘Koshai’ and many others. He was also popular for his playwrights and television dramas.

He won the Bangladesh National Film Awards in three categories, including Best Director, Best Picture and Best Scriptwriter. He also won Bangla Academy Literary Award (2004) and Ekushey Padak (1992).

Hossain is survived by his two sons Sajjad Hossain Dodul and Sohel Arman.
