In a major reshuffle in the education sector, the government has appointed new vice-chancellors to the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and 10 other public universities.

The education ministry confirmed the appointments on Thursday.

The new hires will be responsible for their roles for four years or until their retirement, if that occurs before their tenure as VC.

The other universities with new VCs are Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (DUET), Islamic University, Kushita, Barishal University, Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU), Comilla University, Rangamati Science and Technology University (RSTU), Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University, Jamalpur Science and Technology University (JSTU), Pabna University of Science and Technology (PUST) and Mawlana Bhashani Science and Technology University.

The ministry’s Assistant Secretary Md Sultan Ahmed said the government initially planned to appoint 12 VCs, but later cancelled the one for Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur.

Dhaka University marketing department professor Anbisur Rahman was selected for the post at the Rangpur university.

Sultan told bdnews24.com in the evening that the notifications would be uploaded to the government website by night.

Upon assuming office, the BNP government in the first phase appointed VCs to the Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Jagannath universities.

VCs were also appointed to Khulna University of Engineering and Technology, Bangladesh Open University (BOU) and Dhaka Central University in March.

The New Hires

Prof Ekramul Haque of BUET's Department of Civil Engineering has been appointed as the university's 16th VC. He replaces Prof ABM Badruzzaman.

At the Islamic University, its history professor A K M Motinur Rahman has been appointed the VC.

Prof MM Shariful Karim of the Department of English at Comilla University has been named as its VC.

Chittagong University’s chemistry professor Zainul Abedin Siddique has been tasked as the new VC of the RSTU.

Mohammad Iqbal, a professor in the Department of Industrial and Production Engineering at Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, will take over as the VC of the DUET in Gazipur.

Prof Md Mamun Or Rashid, the dean of the Faculty of Fisheries at Patuakhali Science and Technology University, has been assigned as the VC of Barishal University.

A professor at the Institute of Social Welfare and Research of Dhaka University, Golam Rabbani has been appointed as the new NSTU VC.

Prof Mohammad Musharof Hossain, pro-VC of JSTU, has been made as the new VC of Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University in Mymensingh.

ABM Shahidul Islam, Dhaka University’s marketing professor, has been hired as the VC of Maulana Bhashani University of Science and Technology in Tangail.

Prof Abul Hasnat Md Shamim of the School of Agricultural and Rural Development at the BOU will join as the PUST VC.

Mohammad Amir Hossain Bhuiyan, a professor of environmental science at Jahangirnagar University, has been selected as the new VC of the JSTU.

After the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024, most VCs resigned amid protests.

The interim government hired more than 50 VCs.
