Quota reform protesters and police have engaged in chases and counter-chases during a ‘shutdown programme’ on Thursday morning in Dhaka’s Rampura.
The clash has brought traffic in the area to a standstill.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police have yet to comment on the situation. However, the DMP Traffic Control Room says that traffic on the road in front of BRAC University was brought to a halt around 10:30am when protesters blocked the road.
Students from the private university in Badda had occupied the road in solidarity with the quota protest shutdown from the morning.
Police personnel were deployed along one side of Rampura Bridge and in front of the Canadian University in Badda.
The protesters and police started clashing around 10:30am. Students from East-West University also joined in at one point.
Police are using tear gas and rubber bullets to try and disperse the protesters. At one point, the police took refuge inside the Canadian University and protesters blocked them from leaving. The students then moved to the area in front of BRAC University.
