Dhaka, Jul 15 (bdnews24.com)— Inspired by their recent success at Comilla's Srikail, state-run Bangladesh Petroleum Exploration and Production Company Limited (Bapex) is all set to start digging an exploration well at Sunamganj's 'Sunetra' structure.
Bangladesh Oil, Gas and Mineral Corporation (Petrobangla) Chairman Hossain Mansur told bdnews24.com: "Preparations have been taken to start digging at Sunetra structure from Monday. But if there is heavy rain, the digging might be postponed for a day or two."
The structure has been named 'Sunetra' as part of it fell under Sunamganj district and the rest in Netrakona.
"Sunetra is a potential structure. We're hopeful of a large reserve there," Bapex Managing Director Mortuza Ahmad Faruque told bdnews24.com.
He said necessary preparations for digging well like setting up rig and other necessary machineries have been completed. "We will dig with rig Bijoy-10. We have plans to go up to 3,700 metres below the surface."
Faruk said they have plans to dig several wells there once they get positive results from the experimental well.
The estimated cost of digging this experimental well under the Sunetra Oil/Gas Exploration Well Digging project has been set at around Tk 802.5 million.
Director of the project and also the Bapex Deputy General Manager (Geophysical Division) Mohammad Nurul Islam told bdnews24.com that the well was situated at Gavi village under Dharmapasha upazila of Sunamganj. "The digging work is supposed to finish within 90 days."
He said once the gas reserve was confirmed, the authorities have planned to set up an 80-kilometre long gas transmission line to feed it to the national grid and it would be connected to Biniana-Dhanua pipe line in Kishorganj.
Petrobangla has so far discovered four gas fields in the country.
