Two inmates of the Keraniganj Central Jail in Dhaka have died while undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH).
They died at separate times in the wee hours of Monday morning, said Inspector Habibur Rahman, chief of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital Police Camp.
One of the dead prisoners was Sohrab Hossain, 55, prisoner number 718/A. He suddenly fell ill in jail on Sept 14 and was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital on the orders of the prison authorities. He was later admitted to Ward 602 of the Medicine Department, where he died around 12:30am.
Sohrab’s ancestral home is in Rangamati village in Naogaon.
Meanwhile, Md Azim Uddin, 32, the other prisoner, fell ill in the jail on Sunday and was taken to the Emergency Department of DMCH. He was subsequently admitted to Ward 601 of the Medicine Department and died around 12:15am.
Azim lived in the Shantipara area of Ashulia, Dhaka. His detainee number was 758/A.
Prison guard Aminul Islam, who brought the two men to the hospital, said it was not immediately known which cases they had been detained in connection with.
Habibur said the deaths of the two inmates were confirmed by doctors. Their bodies have been kept at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital morgue for postmortem.
He said the postmortems would be conducted after inquest reports are prepared in the presence of an executive magistrate. The bodies will then be handed over to their families.
