Voting was suspended in a polling centre in Feni’s Dagonbhuiyan and at least seven people were hit by bullets in another centre there on Saturday.
Meanwhile, four policemen were injured when they tried to stop miscreants from snatching ballot-boxes from a centre in Lakshmipur ’s Kamalnagar Upazila.
Assailants snatched two ballot boxes and vandalised two more in Dagonbhuiyan's ‘Alatyoli Government Primary School on Saturday morning, said Assistant Returning Officer Debi Chandra.
Voting has been suspended in that centre, he said.
Meanwhile, at least seven people were wounded in firing outside the centre at ‘Rajapur Government Primary School’.
Police fired eight rounds when miscreants vandalised two vans belonging to journalists, said Dagonbhuiyan Police OC Md Nizamuddin.
Two polling agents, Md Tarek and Abdullal Al Mamun, were shot while they were entering ‘Uttar Alipur Centre’, claimed Abdul Hai Milon, a renegade Awami League candidate.
The two were admitted to Feni Sadar Hospital in critical condition, he said.
Voting was underway to elect Upazila Parishad chairmen for 81 Upazilas in the third phase of the polls.
Six were admitted to Feni Sadar Hospital with bullet injuries, resident physician Asim Kumar Saha told bdnews24.com.
The injured were identified as Shahadat Hossain Ritu, Mithun Nondi, ‘Russel’, Didarul Islam, Saiful Islam and Md Tarek.
Mamun wasn’t among them.
About the violence at Uttar Alipur Centre OC Nizamuddin said, “I’m aware of the firing, but I can’t confirm it.”
Hand bombs were exploded in most of the 62 centres for Dagonbhuiyan Upazila, said BNP-backed candidate Akbar Hossain and ruling party renegade Abdul Hai Milon.
Meanwhile, four police constables were injured in a clash with miscreants who snatched ballot boxes from the polling station at Hajiganj Forkania Madrasa at Lakshmipur’s Kamalnagar.
The ballot boxes were recovered but voting was temporarily suspended in the centre after the incident but resumed at 2:20pm, said Presiding Officer Mahfuzur Rahman.
He said supporters of Awami League-backed chairman candidate AKM Nurul Amin Raju snatched ballot boxes around 11am.
Police fired from shotguns to restore order, he said.
Polling was suspended in two centres in Chandpur’s Kochua Upazila, said the Election Commission (EC).
Polling at Berkota Government Primary School, Majhigacha SM High School was stopped until 12pm, said EC’s Assistant Secretary Ashfakur Rahman.
A presiding officer for the centre at Chondrokona Government Primary School at Mymensingh’s Dhobaura was handed over to police for neglecting duty, said EC officials.
Khairul Hasan was detained and replaced because he did not stay in the centre with polling materials on Friday, they said.
