The incident took place in Sadar Upazila around 11am on Thursday, said Alamgir Kabir, superintendent of police in Rangamati.
Shaktiman, a leader of Jana Sanghati Samiti (MN Larma), was shot while he was entering his office. “He died on the spot,” Kabir said.
Rupom Chakma, who was accompanying Shaktiman, has been injured and admitted to hospital, he said.
However, police could not identify the attackers.
United People’s Democratic Front or UPDF leader Monty Chakma and Dayasona Chakma had been abducted at gunpoint by a group of people on March 18 from a house in Kutukchhari in Rangamati.
They were freed on April 19 in the Madhupur neighbourhood in Khagrachhari.
Dayasona’s father Brishadhan Chakma filed a case on the incident accusing 19 people including Jana Sanghati Samity (MN Larma) Vice-President Shaktiman Chakma and UPDF Democratic President Tapan Jyoti Chakma.
Shaktiman is also named in another case filed on the murder of Mithun Chakma, a UPDF leader.
