Dhaka, July 6 (bdnews24.com ) – Old Dhaka's top criminal Shahidul Islam alias Dakat Shahid was buried at the Azimpur graveyard in the wee hours of Friday.
Dakat Shahid and one of his associates Kalu were shot dead in what RAB said 'crossfire' early Wednesday when they were trying to enter Lakkhibazar area in Old Dhaka. The bodies were kept in the Sir Salimullah Medical College morgue.
The burial took place around 2am Friday at the graveyard after police formalities, Nurul Islam, brother of the slain bandit, told bdnews24.com.
Earlier, the lawmen handed over bodies of Shahid and Kalu to Nurul and Kalu's mother, Marium Begum, after autopsy, Sutrapur sub-inspector Abu Syed said.
The police officer said Marium set off for Madaripur with Kalu's body.
Thousands of people rushed to the morgue to have a sight of Dakat Shahid, but there was no trace of his relatives.
On Thursday noon, Kalu's mother Mariam came first. She burst into tears after identifying her son. Shahid's brother Nurul Islam, accompanied by 30-35 men, after an hour.
"We didn't bury him in village because of people… (who could oppose)," said Nurul Islam when he was asked about the reason behind his burial in the Azimpur graveyard.
After the death of Shahid, he said that he would not go to morgue to take the dead body.
When he was asked about the change of his decision he said, "RAB created pressure to take the dead body because it was creating problem for them. So, we took the dead body unwillingly."
"What is the use? My brother was not a good man," he sighed later.
In response to the question whether it was Shahid's dead body he said, "Come on...he is my younger brother. He became bad due to bad company."
He also said that Shahid's mother Razia Khatun, 80, had also been informed about his death.
According to police, about 18 cases, including six for murder, are lodged against Shahid with various police stations in the capital.
In 2001, Shahid's name hit the top terror list. In 2005, he fled to India. He used to collect money from the businessmen through his accomplices ordering them over phone from India.
Shahid is from Monsapara of Srinagar upazila in Munsiganj district. His father, Shamsul Haque Bhuiyan, died in 1990.
His wife Saleha Begum gave him two daughters and one son. But his son Ismail, 17, died due to electrocution four years ago.
Now Saleha stays in Kolkata with the two daughters – Bithi and Sathia.
