On Saturday, he posted a status on Facebook, his first after wife Mahmuda Aktar Mitu was stabbed and shot dead in Chittagong on June 5.

“I hear my daughter’s cries, all her lamenting, when so many are busy in making up new stories.

“I’m not wearing any armour, I’m holding two children who have lost their mother in my arms.”

“I can neither bear, nor stop these assaults.”

The counter-terror officer, lauded for his work against militant activity in Chittagong, was promoted. He was moved to Police Headquarters in Dhaka a few days before his wife was murdered.

Mitu was walking her 6-year-old son to the school bus around 7am when she was stopped by assailants at the port city’s GEC Mor.

She was stabbed and then shot in the head as one of her attackers pulled the child out of the way.

Babul Aktar filed the case over her murder that came amid a series of militant-linked killings.

He moved to his in-laws' house with the children.

Soon there were rumours that the SP was taken to the Detective Branch offices, 20 days after the murder, for questioning that lasted the whole night.

Media reports suggested the policeman himself was a suspect.

Babul went quiet after this. A senior official said he was at the police headquarters few days ago but has not returned to work.
