Doctors at the Singapore General Hospital pronounced him dead around 11am local time, the Bangladesh High Commissioner in Singapore Mahbub Uz Zaman told bdnews24.com.

The 67-year-old was flown to Singapore on Sep 5 after he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Earlier, he was being treated at the BIRDEM Hospital in Dhaka.

President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have expressed their condolences to the family of  Mohsin Ali, a freedom fighter during the 1971 Liberation War.

Finance Minister AMA Muhith, the senior-most cabinet member, and Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu also expressed their sorrow at the demise of the minister, who was also a member of Awami League’s National Council and National Freedom Fighters Council.

The minister, who became a member of the parliamentary standing committee on the civil aviation ministry after securing the Moulvibazar seat in the 2008 national polls, was given charge of the social welfare ministry after the Awami League secured a second term in office.

Ali, born on Dec 12, 1948, started his politics as a Bangladesh Chhatra League activist.

He fought the Liberation War as a commander of the Mukti Bahini under General MAG Osmani and was a member of the central committee of Sector Commanders Forum.

A president of the Moulvibazar unit of Awami League from 1998-2005, he was elected as the municipality’s chairman thrice.
