Police have arrested six people, including a Muktijoddha Projonmo League leader, over the attack, vandalism and alleged looting at New Gini Properties in Dhaka’s ECB Chattar area.
Shah Alam Anik, who identified himself as a joint convener of the organisation, was arrested by the Detective Branch (DB), according to DB Chief Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam.
"He was arrested yesterday. During questioning, he said he is the joint convener of Muktijoddha Projonmo League. He is being questioned further," Shafiqul told bdnews24.com.
Officers from Cantonment Police Station arrested five others. Four were identified as Mamun, Aslam, Munna and Shahriar Mahmud, while police did not immediately disclose the identity of the fifth.
Police said Mamun is from Gafargaon and lives in a slum in Vasantek, where Munna also lives. Aslam, an autorickshaw driver, is from Tangail.
Cantonment Police Station chief Muhammad Gias Uddin said another suspect had been arrested but declined to disclose his identity immediately.
"The operation is ongoing. The others will be caught," he said.
Police said five of those arrested are named as suspects in the case filed over the attack.
The incident took place at the New Gini housing project on Saturday night, targeting the company's office and nearby facilities, including content creator Salman Muqtadir's "BrownFish" studio.
Project Director Md Saiful Islam Bhuiyan filed the case with Cantonment Police Station on Sunday.
The case names 13 suspects and accuses another 150 to 200 unidentified people.
The complaint alleges that armed attackers entered the project as part of an attempt to seize the property following a previous dispute, opening fire and assaulting engineers and security personnel.
According to the case statement, Saiful was at the project at around 11:20pm on Sept 26 when the group entered the premises allegedly at the instigation and direction of prime suspect Shahriar Mahmud.
The attackers were carrying shotguns, revolvers, machetes, ramda, knives, rods and sticks, the complaint alleges.
It says they fired around 50 blank rounds, causing workers and security personnel to flee, while Saiful took shelter inside a building under construction.
Site engineer Md Parvez was then attacked, according to the complaint.
It alleges that Abul Kashem struck Parvez on the head with the butt of a revolver, causing a head injury, before he was attacked with a sharp weapon. Tk 7,000 was also allegedly taken from him.
Security guard Syed Nazrul Islam was assaulted when he tried to intervene, the complaint says. A wireless set, an Itel feature phone and Tk 2,000 were allegedly taken from him.
The case also alleges that the attackers fired 10 rounds at the project's main gate, damaging the iron gate and glass and causing an estimated Tk 1.5 million in losses.
The attackers then entered the project office and vandalised computer equipment, laptops, a refrigerator, furniture and other items, causing an estimated Tk 1.2 million in damage, according to the complaint.
Saiful alleges that Tk 2.5 million kept in an office locker to purchase construction materials was stolen.
The complaint also alleges that 23 tonnes of AKS steel rods worth around Tk 2.08 million were taken, along with construction materials from a storeroom on the ground floor of Marwa Tower.
A scooter worth around Tk 400,000 belonging to a flat owner named Sumon was also allegedly stolen.
The case lists another 37 types of items allegedly looted, including televisions, high-end editing computers, server equipment, guitars, water tanks, memory cards, sound cards, cameras, tripods, microphones and furniture.
The plaintiff claims the items listed in the case were worth several crore taka in total.
The 13 people named in the case are retired Major General Golam Mohiuddin Chowdhury, Shahriar Mahmud, Abul Kashem, Babul Hossain, Mohammad Shahinuzzaman, Matiur Rahman, Mojibur Rahman, Nurul Islam, Mizanur Rahman, MK Azad, Mamun, Aslam and Munna.
Shahriar is listed as the prime suspect, with the plaintiff alleging that the attack was carried out at his instigation and direction.
Police said operations were continuing to arrest other suspects.
