A Dhaka court has sent three people to jail following their arrest in a case over vandalism, looting, and theft at the New Gini Properties housing project in South Manikdi near Dhaka’s ECB Chattar.
Subrata Debnath, the investigating officer and inspector at Cantonment Police Station, produced the defendants in court on Sunday and petitioned for a five-day remand.
Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman sent the suspects to prison and scheduled the remand hearing for Wednesday, Prosecution Sub-Inspector Tarequr Rahman said.
The three individuals sent to prison are Md Mamun, Md Aslam, and Md Munna.
The attack, vandalism, and looting occurred at New Gini Properties Ltd around 10:30pm on Saturday.
The miscreants targeted the project office, surrounding structures, and a studio named “Brownfish” belonging to content creator Salman Muqtadir during the incident.
Police said the attack might have stemmed from an ongoing land dispute between a property developer and a retired military officer.
According to the case statement, approximately 50 attackers unlawfully trespassed onto the project. They fired around 50 rounds of gunfire and launched an assault armed with machetes, daggers, and sticks.
Several people, including site engineer Md Parvez, sustained severe injuries. At one point, the group broke into Salman's studio, vandalising the premises and looting items inside.
The assailants looted a significant quantity of valuables from the New Gini Properties Ltd project site, including cash, laptops, computers, electrical cables, cameras, and professional media equipment. Vehicles on site were also vandalised.
New Gini Properties authority claimed in the lawsuit that the vandalism and looting resulted in damage worth around Tk 14 million and the theft of property worth around Tk 15 million.
Upon receiving reports of the incident, officers from Cantonment Police Station arrived at the scene, where the attackers opened fire on police.
Law enforcing personnel responded by firing five shotgun rounds in self-defence and to bring the situation under control.
Police subsequently arrested two suspects at the scene and apprehended a third following a follow-up operation. They also confirmed that local weapons and spent bullet casings were recovered from the arrestees.
Saiful Islam Bhuiyan, an official at the project, filed the case with Cantonment Police on the day of the attack against 10 individuals alongside 150 to 200 unnamed suspects.
