Rangpur polls: 30% votes cast in 4 hours

Voting begins in Rangpur

The final results will be collected from the polling centres and announced from the Control Room at the Police Community Hall, said the election’s Returning Officer Subhash Chandra Sarkar.

Voting took place at 193 polling centres in the northern city from 8am to 4pm on Thursday. Seven candidates ran for the post of mayor, while 276 are vying for 33 ward councillor seats.

“Voting ended at 4pm. We will begin counting the votes after we allow all those who were inside polling centres by 4pm to cast their ballots,” said Sarkar.

Nearly 400,000 are registered to vote in the polls. There was a turnout of approximately 46 percent by 1:30pm, said Sarkar. The turnout may rise to 70 percent in the final tally, he said.
