A lawyer for the 17-year-old boy who was in the driver’s seat of a car that ran over and killed a construction worker on a footpath in Dhaka’s Baridhara says the case has been settled for Tk 900,000.
Mehedi Hasan, 24, died after a car ran onto a footpath in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone and hit him while he was resting there on Tuesday.
People at the scene detained the teenager, who was found in the driver’s seat, and handed him over to police. He was released into his uncle’s custody after questioning that night, but arrested the following day amid criticism over the handling of the incident.
On Thursday, a Dhaka juvenile court ordered the teenager to be sent to the Juvenile Development Centre in Gazipur's Tongi.
‘Tk 900,000 Paid’
Following the hearing, the teenager’s lawyer Alamgir Hossain told reporters that a settlement had been reached with Mehedi’s family.
“Tk 100,000 has been given for the burial and funeral expenses, while Tk 800,000 has been provided considering the future of the deceased construction worker Mehedi Hasan’s elderly parents,” he said.
Mehedi’s brother Moktadir Islam, who filed the case, confirmed that a settlement had been reached but said he did not know how much money was involved.
“A settlement has been reached over the case. I don’t know how much money was involved. My uncle knows,” he said.
Police Say Investigation Will Continue
The crash occurred around 5pm on Tuesday on Road No. 1 in the Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.
According to the case account, the car veered out of control and struck Mehedi as he sat on the footpath. He was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Moktadir filed a case with Gulshan Police Station on Wednesday. The case named Akash Mark as the driver, but did not name the teenager.
Officers from Gulshan Police Station subsequently arrested the teenager on Wednesday.
Police produced him in court on Thursday, where investigating officer Sub-Inspector Arefin Islam sought an order to detain him at a juvenile development centre.
Judge Md Abdul Moktadir of Dhaka Juvenile Court-8 granted the application and ordered the teenager to be sent to the centre in Tongi.
Asked about the reported settlement, Arefin said he was unaware of it.
He said it would not affect the police investigation.
“No, we will continue our investigation as usual,” he said.
