Police have arrested a 17-year-old over the death of a construction worker who was run over by an SUV after it mounted a pavement in Dhaka’s Baridhara.
Gulshan Police chief Zahed Noor said Wednesday the teenager was arrested in a house on Road 12 in Gulshan and remains in police custody.
The case over Tuesday afternoon’s incident was initially filed without naming the teenager.
The person identified as the vehicle’s driver was made the suspect. Police said the teenager’s father is a captain at Biman Bangladesh Airlines.
“The case is being investigated properly, and legal action will be taken against the actual offender,” the officer said.
The incident occurred near the German Embassy at Baridhara Road 1 when an SUV lost traction and ran over 24-year-old construction worker known only as Mehedi, killing him at the spot.
CCTV footage showed a black SUV speeding onto the pavement, where Mehedi was sitting. The vehicle struck him before crashing into and breaking a streetlight pole.
Locals rescued Mehedi and took him to Kurmitola General Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
After the crash, locals detained a teenager who emerged from the driver’s seat and handed him over to police.
Allegations later emerged that police released him after taking him to the station.
Police said he was removed from the scene to protect him from a mob.
Mehedi’s brother filed a case, but the teenager was not named, Gulshan Police investigation officer Ismail Hossain said.
The case names Akash Mark, 44, as the person identified as the vehicle’s driver.
“Although the driver’s name is in the case, our preliminary investigation and analysis of CCTV footage show the teenager emerging from the driver’s seat after the crash. We believe he was driving the vehicle,” Ismail said.
“We are also looking for the driver. If he is arrested, the actual circumstances will become clear,” he added.
