Rajshahi, Mar 10 (bdnews24.com) — The Rajshahi water agency has started formal operation.
Mayor A H M Khairuzzaman Liton inaugurated the function at Sapura Ahmednagar in the city on Thursday noon.
He said the city corporation had adopted a short, interim and long term plan in light of its need in the next 50 years. "Establishing the water supply agency is a part of that."
The city corporation will provide the required assistance to make the agency self-reliant gradually so that it can meet the demand of the city and implement the sewerage system in a planned manner, the city mayor added.
"Water level is going down gradually due to the lack of rainfall. So, it is emphasised on using sub-surface water instead of surface water," he said.
A statement said the government had set up Rajshahi WASA on Aug 1, 2010.
Rajshahi WASA executive engineer Masum Parvez told reporters that WASA would acquire water supply infrastructure and would keep the water tariffs unchanged.
The people of this city would not have to pay more for this, he added.
