Police have arrested nearly three dozen suspects but have failed to identify the killers.
The case filed over the murder by university registrar Entajul Haque on Sunday also did not specifically accuse anyone.
The suspects include Humayun Ahmed, the principal of Islamia College, a stronghold of Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Earlier, a facebook group, named Ansar al Islam Bangladesh-2, opened few hours after the attack took responsibility for killing the sociology teacher.
But police could not confirm if there was a militant group active in Bangladesh in that name, or if it was a ploy to distract investigators from the real criminals.
But the victim’s son Soumin Sahrid Javin after burying his father in their family graveyard at Gaibandha on Sunday told reporters that Islamist militants were behind the killing.
