Dhaka, June 17 (bdnews24.com) — A voluntary blood donation platform has accorded reception to the blood donors, who offered their blood to the ailing people without a second thought.
Quantum foundation organised the reception for 321 donators at the National Press Club auditorium on Friday.
A 'Silver Medal', certificate and a special ID cards were given to 300 donors, who donated for at least 10 times, while the rest 25, who donated for at least 25 times, were given a 'Golden Crest', certificate and a special ID card.
Chief guest and former national professor M R Khan, and special guest Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed handed over the certificates to them.
Khan said, "Science tells us that blood donation decreases the risk of complicated and critical diseases."
"So, we must come forth to donate blood as we must remember the fact that blood cannot be substituted with anything else, when needed," he told the function.
According to the Quantum Foundation, only 26 percent of the annual 500,000 units of blood demand were met by voluntary, non-commercial blood donations in Bangladesh.
In Bangladesh, only 0.4 people of a thousand donate blood voluntarily, which is 113 in Switzerland and 60-80 in the countries in Europe.
The country could meet its annual need if only two of a thousand people donate blood.
According to the foundation, founded in 1996, there are around 141,086 blood donators across the country under the programme.
