A fire has ripped through TUPTUP Resto and Resort at Cox's Bazar's Inani Beach, with authorities fearing several casualties.
The blaze broke out around 6:30am on Saturday at the resort near Patuartek Beach along Marine Drive, said Mohammad Atikur Rahman Majumder, chief of Ukhiya Police Station.
Speaking around 10:30am, he said there were reports of casualties, but police could not yet confirm how many people had died or were missing.
"Police and Fire Service teams are working at the scene. Give us another hour. It would not be right to give a casualty figure at this stage."
The resort is about 29km from Kolatoli at the entrance to the beach town.
The structure, built largely of bamboo and wood, was eventually destroyed by the fire.
Syed Muhammad Morshed Hossain, deputy assistant director of the Cox's Bazar Fire Service, said all three floors of the resort were made of wood and the entire building had burnt down.
"We are searching the site. We suspect around five people may have died, but we cannot confirm anything until the search is complete," he said.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were not immediately clear.
