Brahmanbaria-2 Independent Member of Parliament (MP) Rumeen Farhan has said the Constitution gives any citizen of Bangladesh the right to return to the country at any time after leaving it.
The former BNP leader's remarks came in response to reporters asking about ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina's potential return to Bangladesh after a reception for meritorious students in Brahmanbaria’s Ashuganj Upazila on Friday afternoon.
She said, "Any citizen of Bangladesh can leave the country at any time and can also enter the country at any time. This is clearly stated in the Constitution.
"What steps the government will take after they enter Bangladesh is up to the government."
Ashuganj's “Abdul Qadir Shah Pathagaar” organised the Friday event.
The Upazila’s BNP unit recently held a broom procession to protest Rumeen's statement criticising the BNP government in parliament.
BNP leaders and activists also warned that she would be declared undesirable in Ashuganj if she did not withdraw her statement.
When asked about it, the MP said: "This happens in politics. It's nothing.
“In politics, there will be differing opinions; unwanted announcements will be made. These are all normal."
