Police arrest 9 over attack on Mirpur health centre, recover looted goods

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested nine people in connection with the attack, vandalism and looting at the Radda MCH-FP Centre in Mirpur.

Police have also recovered two truckloads of goods allegedly looted from the health centre.

DMP Deputy Commissioner (Media and Public Relations) Akhtar Hossain shared the information in a text message on Sunday.

Police said raids were continuing to identify and arrest others involved in the incident and recover the remaining stolen goods.

The office of Radda MCH, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), was demolished in Mirpur on the night of Sept 25.

The organisation alleged that a large quantity of office equipment and vaccination supplies was also looted during the attack.

Radda Executive Director Nasrin Akhter filed a case over the incident with Shah Ali Police Station.

The organisation said the entire facility, comprising one permanent and three semi-permanent buildings, was demolished using heavy machinery.

The attackers allegedly left after putting up a signboard reading “Sommanona Dokandar Samity Limited” in front of the property.

A businessman in Mirpur told bdnews24.com there were disputes surrounding Radda’s 10-katha plot and alleged that the attack was carried out in an attempt to seize the land under the leadership of local BNP leader Hanif Mia.

Hanif has been named as an accused in the case.

He denied any involvement in the incident.

“I am not involved in this incident in any way. I don’t even know what happened there. Who put my name in the case?” he said.

Hanif added that he would inquire about the matter at the police station.
