The National Implementation Committee for Administrative Reorganisation or NICAR, headed by the prime minister, cleared the proposal on Monday.

A proposal to extend the boundaries of the Mymensingh Municipality, established in 1869, did not get the green light, said Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam.

“But Mymensingh will be turned into a city corporation, as it is a divisional headquarters,” he told reporters at the Secretariat.

In 2015, Mymensingh was declared the eighth administrative division of the country.

It consists of four districts—Mymensingh, Jamalpur, Sherpur and Netrokona.

In August, a new education board, the 11th in the country, was formed to monitor secondary and higher secondary level institutions in the districts under the division.

NICAR has also cleared a proposal to turn Shayestaganj into an Upazila, raising the number of Upazilas in Bangladesh to 492.

The Cabinet secretary said the number of police stations in Dhaka was also going up to 50 with a new one at Hatirjheel.

NICAR approved a proposal to create 71 posts for the new police station, Shafiul said.

Charfashion Police Station will be bifurcated, and NICAR approved a proposal to create 43 posts for the new one, Dolarhat Police Station.
