With this, the number of education boards now stands at 11. The new board will monitor activities and progress of secondary and higher secondary educational institutions in Mymensingh, Netrakona, Sherpur and Jamalpur.

Until now, Dhaka Education Board monitored the situation there.

The government formed a seven-member committee last year to review a proposal of forming a new education board in Mymensingh.

The committee headed by Chowdhury Mufat Ahmed made a proposal which Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina approved.

Other general education boards cover Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong, Comilla, Sylhet, Barisal, Jessore and Dinajpur.

The education ministry's Technical and Madrasah Education Division monitors madrasahs and technical institutes through two separate boards in the districts.
