A man has been detained by locals and turned over to the police after his mother and 2-year-old niece were allegedly hacked to death in Cumilla’s Debidwar Upazila.
The incident took place in the Boro Shalghar area of the Upazila on Monday morning, said Lutfor Rahman, Cumilla additional superintendent of police.

The dead woman was identified as Peyara Begum. Her granddaughter was also killed.
Another victim, Rabeya Begum, was taken to Cumilla Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
According to police and locals, three members of the same family were attacked. Peyara and her granddaughter died at the scene, while locals rescued Rabeya and took her to hospital.
Locals also detained Peyara’s son Emon on suspicion of involvement in the attack and handed him over to police.
Police have yet to determine a motive for the killings.
