The authorities announced closure of the university for an indefinite period after the turf war erupted on Wednesday afternoon.

The dead, Mosharraf Hossain, was a second year student of physics.

Proctor Khademul Islam said the students have been asked to leave the residential halls within 10am on Thursday.

Vice-Chancellor Mohammad Alauddin ordered to keep the university closed until further notice, the proctor said.

The university’s Regent Board will take decision over the next course of action on Thursday, he added.

The clash on Wednesday between the faction led by Monirul Islam and the other led by Mosharraf Hossain erupted when Mosharraf and his followers entered the campus around 3pm.

At one stage, the supporters of Monirul started to hack Mosharraf and his associate ‘Faisal’ .

Monirul left with his supporters when the authorities came.

The proctor said Mosharraf and Faisal were taken to Tangail Medical College and Hospital in critical condition.

They were transferred to Dhaka’s National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR aka Pangu Hospital) when their condition deteriorated.

They were transferred again to Savar’s Enam Medical College and Hospital.

Injured Faisal is a student of criminology and police science department.

Tangail Sadar Police Station Sub-Inspector Pranbandhu Biswas said tension has risen in the campus following the incident.

Additional police were deployed to control the situation, he added.

BCL’s central committee in a statement claimed that it has no organisational representation at that university in Tangail.

“So, we don’t have any activity there and even we have not yet declared any committee for the university,” the statement said.

The statement, signed by BCL President HM Badiuzzaman Sohag and General Secretary Siddiqui Nazmul Alam, said news over BCL’s connection with the clash were not ‘realistic and informative’.
