Begum Rokeya University authorities have sacked 11 staff members -- including three teachers -- over their involvement in the killing of Abu Sayed during the July 2024 Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Rangpur.

The decision was taken during the university's 123rd syndicate meeting on Wednesday following an order issued by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), Vice-Chancellor Prof Md Showkat Ali said on Thursday.

Abu Sayed, a student in the English department, was shot and killed by police outside the university gate on Jul 16, 2024, during protests demanding quota reform.

The dismissed faculty members are Associate Prof Asaduzzaman Mandal Asad of the public administration department, Associate Prof Mashiur Rahman of the mathematics department, and Associate Prof Shariful Islam of the political science department, who also served as the university's former proctor.

Mashiur and Asaduzzaman remain absconding, while Shariful is currently behind bars.

The eight sacked administrative officers and staff include former assistant registrars Rafiul Hasan Russell and Hafizur Rahman Tufan, section officer Md Moniruzzaman Palash, office assistant-cum-computer operator Mahabubar Rahman, MLSS Mohammad Nurunnabi Mandal, security guard Nur Alam Mia, employee Anwar Parvez Apel, and MLSS AKM Amir Hossain.

"We received the order from the International Crimes Tribunal two days ago," Vice-Chancellor Showkat said. "After presenting it to the syndicate, the decision was taken to permanently terminate the employment of those involved."

On Apr 9, International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nozrul Islam Chowdhury, handed down verdicts in the crimes against humanity case.

Former police assistant sub-inspector Amir Hossain and former constable Sujan Chandra Roy -- both currently serving jail terms -- were sentenced to death.

Three other defendants received life sentences, while several others were handed varying prison terms.

Former vice-chancellor Hasibur Rashid, former police commissioner Moniruzzaman, the two absconding teachers Mashiur and Asaduzzaman, and university Chhatra League president Pomel Barua were sentenced in absentia to 10 years in prison each.

Former proctor Shariful was handed a five-year sentence.
