Leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities have been banned, staged a brief procession in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi, with police reporting four crude bomb explosions.
The procession took place around 12:15pm on Saturday in the Dhanmondi Road No. 27 area, according to Dhanmondi Police Station chief Muhammad Imdadul Islam.
“A group of people gathered to hold a procession and police dispersed them,” he said.
“Three people were detained from the scene.”
A video of the incident shows a group marching along the road chanting “Joy Bangla”.
Witnesses said the procession began near Ibn Sina Hospital and continued towards the Bata outlet on Road 27, where police gave chase.
Several crude bombs were exploded at the time, according to the witnesses.
Imdadul said police were checking the identities and backgrounds of the three detainees before taking the necessary legal action.
Another March After Gulshan
The Dhanmondi incident comes about two weeks after Awami League leaders and activists and members of its affiliated organisations attempted a similar procession in the capital’s Gulshan on Sept 11.
Crude bombs were exploded during that incident, while police fired rubber bullets as they dispersed the procession.
Police say 179 people have so far been arrested in the case filed over the Gulshan incident, with several taken into remand for questioning.
The procession prompted changes in the Gulshan police leadership amid widespread discussion of the incident.
