Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has met with President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir at Bangabhaban.
It was the premier’s first meeting with the head of state there since Fakhrul assumed office.
The meeting took place at 3pm on Tuesday, President’s Press Secretary Sarwar Alam said.
Tarique briefed the president on his US visit, the 81st UN General Assembly and meetings on the sidelines with heads of state and government, the UN secretary general and senior officials, and senior representatives of international economic and development organisations.
Fakhrul congratulated Tarique on his “historic” address to the UNGA, describing it as “far-sighted, resolute and directional”.
“The speech reflected Bangladesh’s national interests and the hopes and aspirations of its people, while clearly presenting Bangladesh’s position on important global issues,” the president said.
“This visit played an important role in further consolidating and strengthening Bangladesh’s position internationally and safeguarding public interests. It also made a significant contribution to expanding and strengthening bilateral and multilateral relations.”
The president and prime minister also discussed different issues involving national and state interests, Sarwar said.
Fakhrul thanked Tarique for visiting Bangabhaban and welcomed him on arrival.
The president then introduced the prime minister to his military secretary, secretary, press secretary and other senior officials.
