A suspected mugger has been killed after being accidentally shot by an accomplice during a mugging attempt in the Digholia Upazila of Khulna.
The incident took place around 2am on Friday near the Steamer Ghat at Deyara Ferry Terminal, according to Additional Superintendent of Police Abir Siddique Shuvro, spokesperson for Khulna district police.
The deceased, identified only as Sagor, 30, was a resident of Deyara Colony under Sadar Union.
He was part of a mugging group that intercepted a trader on his way home after work, Abir said.
The trader, 28-year-old Tahidul Islam, was held at gunpoint and assaulted when he resisted, police said.
One of the muggers opened fire, but the bullet missed its intended target and struck Sagor instead.
Tahidul was injured in the assault and is receiving treatment at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH).
Sagor was first taken to Digholia Upazila Health Complex and later shifted to KMCH, where doctors declared him dead.
Before his death, Sagor reportedly provided information about his accomplices, police said.
The body has been sent to the hospital morgue for postmortem.
