Victim Kumkum Chowdhury's husband Sukhmoy Chowdhury named his son Sumit in the murder case filed with Bandar Police Station early Sunday, Officer-in-Charge of the station AKM Mohiuddin Selim said.
A separate case has been filed by the Bandar police regarding the suicide attempt that took place at city’s Goasildanga area on Saturday. Sub-Inspector Aminul Islam filed the case. Sumit tried to kill himself after murdering his mother.
According to the relatives and police sources, Sumit became 'mentally disturbed' after he failed in HSC examination earlier this year for which his mother repeatedly reprimanded him.
His mother rebuked him again on Saturday after he failed to obtain the desired results following the publication of re-evaluation results on the same day. He responded to his mother’s anger with attacking her with a kitchen knife and hacked her to death. Sumit later tried to commit suicide himself, police said.
"Both mother and son were mentally disturbed since the publication of HSC results. The murder might have taken place as a consequence of their depression," police inspector Badrul Mamun said on Saturday.
Sumit is now undergoing treatment at Chittagong Medical College Hospital with wounds on his neck.
