A man has been beaten to death by an angry crowd after he reportedly hacked a youth and severed his hand in Barguna’s Pathorghata.

The “mob” later looted and then carried out an arson attack on the house of the victim, identified as 38-year-old Abul Bashar Sujon from Lemua village under Raihanpur Union.

Pathorghata Police Sub-Inspector Asit Kumar confirmed the incidents.

Reaz Mia, 28, whose hand was severed, was admitted to Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barisal.

Police said Reaz and Sujon engaged in a scuffle after the latter attacked Reaz’s younger brother Kalu Mia, 20, on Thursday night.

Sujon reportedly hacked Reaz and severed one of his hands at one point in the fight. Sujon’s condition is stated to be critical.

The incident outraged the villagers of Lemua, who launched an attack on Sujon’s residence around 10am on Friday.

Police say the crowd lynched Sujon, at one point “gouging out his eyes”. During the incident, locals also vandalised his house and set it on fire.

Police rescued Sujon with his hands and legs tied around 2pm. He was announced dead at the Upazila Health Complex.

“A tense situation is prevailing in the area. Police patrols have been intensified,” said Asit.
