A Dhaka court has sentenced five people to death for the murder of Delwar Hossain Sardar, a young man from Shariatpur, committed eight years ago.

Judge Mohammad Halim Ullah Chowdhury of Dhaka's Speedy Trial Tribunal No. 4 announced the verdict on Thursday afternoon.

Bench assistant of the concerned court, Mizanur Rahman, said the judge acquitted 12 accused in the case as the charges were not proven.

The convicts are Ismail Sardar, Salmun Sardar, Rezaul Sardar, Jewel Sardar, and Aminul Sardar.

The acquitted are Mujibar Sardar, Fazlul Sardar, A Malek Sardar, Moklesh Sardar, Mahbub Sardar, Tota Sardar, Tipu Sardar, Parcez Sardar, A Salam Sardar, Pavel Sardar, Azizul Haque Sardar, and Parul Begum.

Delwar was a resident of West Charrosuddhi village, located within the Palong Police Station area.

According to the case dossier, on Jul 12, 2017, Delwar and his brother Dulal were returning home from Subchani Bazar on an easy bike.

Due to a previous enmity, the accused blocked their path, pulled Delwar down onto the road, and beat him with a hammer.

When Dulal tried to intervene, Ismail and Rezaul assaulted him as well.

After the incident, the injured were rescued and first taken to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital. Delwar was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

A day after the incident, on Jul 14, 2017, Delwar's father, Salam Sardar, filed a murder case with Palong Police Station.

After the investigation, Faridpur District PBI Inspector Delwar Hossain filed a chargesheet in the court on Dec 10, 2018, accusing 18 people.

One of the accused died during trial. The judge of the Speedy Trial Tribunal delivered the verdict after recording the testimonies of 31 witnesses.
