Preparations are complete at Bangabhaban’s Darbar Hall for the swearing-in of newly elected President Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Friday evening.

Fakhrul is scheduled to take the oath at 7:30pm, with Acting Speaker Kayser Kamal administering it.

More than 1,200 guests have been invited to the ceremony, according to Cabinet Division officials.

“All preparations for the honourable president’s swearing-in ceremony have been completed. Everything is ready,” Presidential Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam told bdnews24.com.

He said the Cabinet Division was overseeing the ceremony, which will be conducted by Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani.

According to an invitation issued by the Cabinet Division, Fakhrul will arrive at the Darbar Hall at 7:30pm. The national anthem and a recitation from the Holy Quran will be followed by the oath of office.

The swearing-in comes a day after Fakhrul won a contested presidential election in parliament, securing 255 votes.

He was nominated by the BNP, while retired Colonel Oli Ahmad contested as the candidate of the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.

Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin, serving as the electoral officer, announced the result in the parliamentary chamber after voting and counting concluded on Thursday. A gazette notification confirming Fakhrul’s election was issued later that night.

Fakhrul will succeed Mohammad Shahabuddin, Bangladesh’s 22nd president, who stepped down on Jul 24. His resignation triggered the constitutional process to elect a successor within 90 days.

Thursday’s vote marked the first contested presidential election in Bangladesh in 35 years.

The previous contest came after the parliamentary system was restored in 1991, when the BNP and Awami League fielded rival candidates.
