BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has begun his election campaign in northern Bangladesh with a visit to the shrine of the revered Sufi saint Shah Makhdum (R.) in Rajshahi.
He arrived at the shrine in the city’s Dargah Para around 1:15pm on Thursday, where he paid his respects and later signed the visitors’ book, party sources said.
Earlier in the day, Tarique reached Rajshahi Airport on a Biman Bangladesh flight before heading into a packed schedule of rallies across the northern region.

He is scheduled to join an election rally at the city’s Madrasa Field at 2pm, where BNP candidates from 13 parliamentary constituencies in Rajshahi, Natore and Chapainawabganj are participating.
After completing the Rajshahi rally, Tarique will travel by road to Naogaon, where he is expected to address another election rally at the city’s ATM Ground at 5:30pm.
Later in the evening, at 7:30pm, he is scheduled to speak at a rally at Altafunnesa Playground in Bogura.
Tarique formally began his election campaign on Jan 22 with a rally at the Government Alia Madrasa Ground in Sylhet after visiting the shrines of Hazrat Shah Jalal (R.) and Hazrat Shah Paran (R.).
That day, he held seven rallies across Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Habiganj, Brahmanbaria, Kishoreganj, Narsingdi and Narayanganj.
The second phase of his campaign began from Chattogram on Sunday, when he addressed five rallies in Chattogram, Feni, Cumilla and Narayanganj.
On Tuesday, he held a divisional public meeting at the Circuit House Ground in Mymensingh, followed by two more rallies in Gazipur and Uttara in Dhaka.

The BNP chairman is set to continue his three-day northern tour on Friday with a visit to Rangpur. After paying respects at Abu Sayed’s grave in Pirganj, he will address a public meeting at the Rangpur Eidgah Ground later in the day.
His tour will conclude on Saturday with election rallies at the BSCIC Industrial Park in Sirajganj in the afternoon and at the Charjana Bypass area in Tangail.
During the trip, Tarique will spend two nights in Bogura at Hotel Naz Garden, according to party officials.
