Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to expand his cabinet six months after forming the government, with several MPs emerging as possible new ministers and state ministers.

Media reports say four new members could be sworn in at Bangabhaban on Friday night, after Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir takes the oath as Bangladesh’s new president.

bdnews24.com has been able to confirm that at least two of the prospective cabinet members have received calls from the Cabinet Division.

Bandarban MP Sa Ching Prue Jerry told bdnews24.com he was “seriously busy” when contacted about the possibility of joining the cabinet.

One of his aides later confirmed that Sa Ching had received a call from the Cabinet Division asking him to be at Bangabhaban in the evening.

Bangladesh Jatiya Party Chairman and Bhola-1 MP Andaleeve Rahman also answered a call from bdnews24.com but declined to comment on the prospect of joining the cabinet.

A person close to Partho, however, confirmed that he too had received a call from the Cabinet Division.

BNP Standing Committee Member and Narsingdi-2 MP Abdul Moyeen Khan has also been named in media reports as a possible addition to the cabinet. He could not immediately be reached for comment.

His aide Md Bahauddin Bhuiyan Milton said he did not know whether Moyeen had received a call from the Cabinet Division but was hopeful that the BNP leader would be among those joining the government.

Moyeen is expected to attend Fakhrul’s presidential swearing-in at Bangabhaban at 7:30pm, Milton added.

Gaibandha-4 MP Mohammad Shamim Kaiser is another name being mentioned in media reports. He told a local journalist that he was “waiting”.

Reports say the new ministers and state ministers could take their oaths after Fakhrul’s swearing-in at the Darbar Hall.

In another sign that preparations for the cabinet expansion are under way, the Cabinet Division has asked the government’s transport directorate to have six vehicles ready.

Raja Muhammad Abdul Hai, transport commissioner and additional secretary at the directorate, confirmed the request to bdnews24.com.

“The Cabinet Division has asked us to send six vehicles. We will send them at the appropriate time,” he said.

When contacted about the arrangements, the Cabinet Division said the details would be formally confirmed in a statement.
